Executive Chef
Kassandra McGregor
An award-winning chef of more than 20 years, Kassandra is considered a backbone of 13 Coins’ entire culinary operation. Since 1986, she has practiced food preparation in line production, banquet and a la carte operations for leading hotels, restaurants and bakeries. She has innovated products, found creative ways to run kitchen operations and just loves cooking. You’ll find her most days at their Boren location.
Among her philosophies is “take care of your staff and they will take care of your guests.” This carries through at 13 Coins, right down to many special customer orders. Thanks to her large family of restaurateurs and cooks Kassandra learned to immerse all five senses in the practice.
At home and work, her five “must use” ingredients include garlic, salt, pepper, olive oil and basil (the latter of which she grows at home).
Kassandra enjoys time spending with her family, as well as growing herbs, flowers and strawberries at her Bothell home.
Pastry Chef JD Calhoun
JD Calhoun, the man behind the sweet and savory pastry masterpieces of 13 Coins, is a self-taught, 30-year restaurant veteran who has dedicated 23 of those years to the Boren and SeaTac 13 Coins locations.
“I’ve worked every position in the kitchen,” he says. “I love to cook and bake and I thrive on the feedback of people appreciating my work, and that keeps me going.”
JD, raised in Mississippi, was first influenced in baking by his mother. He has realized an innate ability to envision something, create it, and give it his own signature. His love of food drove him to a restaurant career he pursued wholeheartedly. Staff and customers alike rave about JD’s from-scratch delights: Key Lime Pie, Red Velvet Cake (just like grandma), ethereal Coconut and Banana Cream Pies, and a classic Carrot Cake.
Look for his tiramisu, fried ice cream and crème brulee lining the dessert menu. For custom baked bliss, JD also hand-crafts muffins, coffee cake and fresh baked cookies upon request.
